ABOUT AN AFFORDABLE MAIDS FRANCHISE BACKGROUND My name is Michael Harper. I am extremely proud to have created, developed and established Affordable Maids to become the success story that it is today. It all started back in early 1995. At that time I had been managing large retail shopping centres for one of the "top 50" corporations in Australia for around 10 years. Although I was successful in my career, I became disenchanted with the mindless reporting, endless politics and long hours common in large corporations. I desperately needed to do something on my own where my direct input would be directly rewarded. I was also keen to establish an enviable lifestyle. I attended a marketing course which nominated the "home service industry" as the growth industry for the new century. After conducting extensive market research, I established that the home cleaning industry was virtually a "cottage industry", fragmented and with very limited professionalism. It was a huge industry undergoing enormous growth as people became busier and had reduced amounts of leisure time. I therefore decided to build a professional business plan and examine the possibilities. My business plan, developed over more than 6 months contained extensive market research, SWOT analysis, marketing plans, pricing structures budgets etc etc. The bottom line was that the project was definitely a financial "goer" On 1 April 1995 (an auspicious date) Affordable Maids was launched on the Central Coast of NSW. At the end of the first year we were just 2.0% ahead of our projected turnover and well ahead of our projected profit. We have continued to experience strong growth since virtually day one. In 1998 we decided to grow the business further and established a branch in the Sydney Eastern Suburbs based at Double Bay. In 1999 we opened on the Sydney North Shore based at Wahroonga and have since opened in the Southern Newcastle region based at Speers Point. Other operations were initiated in Brisbane and Bundaberg to gauge enquiry levels in differing demographic areas. What a change in lifestyle it has proven to be over the years to date. No more dressing in a suit to spend 8-10 hours in a 'jail like' office handling the politics and endless reporting. I now work from home at my own pace, I go sailing and play golf mid week at my choosing. It's a great lifestyle !! I need to work less than 10 hours each week to keep the business up to date although I do need to be available on the phone at all times. However with the technology of mobile phones I am not tied down. I still get a huge buzz sitting on the deck of my yacht answering the phone with " Good morning Affordable Maids...." All this and I am earning more than I was as a Shopping Centre Manager. I now seek to share this opportunity with a professional like minded person and to make available all the lessons and experience that I have gleaned during more than 10 years operating the business. I am absolutely convinced that the right individual can generate the income and lifestyle that I have been fortunate enough to establish during my stint at the helm of Affordable maids.
